Stone Piece

Today you get more eccentric, demented art, reflecting visions of the utmost madness - the strident yowl of a soul in agony. It smites the eyes like a viscious, unjustified insult, causing the soul of the beholder to be wounded and seared to a blackened husk!

Well, it's probably not quite that bad, but it is somewhat different than the normal, run-of-the-mill artworks you might see.

This piece consists of some more of that nice Pueblo Reservoir stone (see previous post) recessed into a pastel rubbed paper over a foamcore base. Having sawn a 90 degree angle into one corner of each stone, I placed them such that I could insert various recycled metals between them to add visual interest and mystery.

The metals in question are: polished brass from old bullet casings picked up in the mountains, cut apart and pounded flat on an anvil and then rubbed thoroughly with steel wool until shiny; old rusty can metal also picked up around mountain campfire sites; soft drink can aluminum pounded flat and polished, again with steel wool.

It all comes together to form an enigmatic, almost mystical image - like the symbol of a stone age shaman or the up-welling of metallic minerals through the crevices of the earth. Or maybe like the abstract shiftings and splittings of a partially insane amateur artist's brain structure.
